Sources of Information on MS Research

Some sources of information on MS research are more reliable than others. The mainstream media has a tendency to ‘overhype’ some research stories. It can be hard to know which reports on MS research are accurate and reliable, and which are not.

MS Ireland recommends the following organisations and websites as good, reliable and accurate sources of up-to-date information on MS research.

MS International Federation (MSIF)

MSIF have a very good research page on their website with information about clinical trials, the challenges of MS research and stem cell research:

You can also sign up for MSIF’s research newsletter here:

MS Trust (UK)

The MS Trust runs a regular search for interesting and relevant research articles relating to multiple sclerosis using Medline, a specialised search engine for medical journals. You can also sign up for research updates via email:

Multiple Sclerosis News Today

Multiple Sclerosis News Today post near-daily updates with research news and information from around the world. They also have blogs and articles written by people with MS giving their perspectives on various aspects of MS research. They have an email newsletter you can sign up for:

International Progressive MS Alliance

The International Progressive MS Alliance is an unprecedented global collaboration of MS organizations, researchers, clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, and people with progressive MS. The Alliance was initially established in 2012 as the International Progressive MS Collaborative, with six founding members (the MS societies of Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA, and the MS International Federation). These organisations made a joint commitment to speed up the development of treatment for progressive MS by removing scientific and technology barriers.

The International Progressive MS Alliance’s website contains lots of information about the type of research they are funding and supporting and some key announcements from research projects to date:

Neurology Now

Neurology Now is the research and information website for the American Academy of Neurology. If you type ‘multiple sclerosis’ into their search engine you will find lots of research updates:

International Journal of MS Care

Most academic journals either require you to be registered with a university or other research institution or pay a fee before you can access articles. However the International Journal of MS Care is a free, open access online journal, publishing peer-reviewed articles on a range of MS research topics:

MS Ireland’s MS Research eZine

Last but not least is MS Ireland’s own research eZine, MS Research! Published twice a year (usually in June and December) we share the latest updates in Irish and international MS research. You can access previous issues here
