Pilates and MS

Request for research participants from University of Limerick

Karl Fleming, a Structured PhD student, Dr. Matthew Herring from the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences and Prof. Susan Coote from the Clinical Therapies Department of University of Limerick are seeking your participation in a research project examining the effects of Pilates on mood among people with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Who can participate?  

Anyone with a diagnosis of MS, aged 18 years or over, with no experience in participating in Pilates can take part. Participants should have no other health conditions or medical concerns that may prevent safe participation in physical activity.   

What is involved? 

If you decide to take part, you will complete two sessions per week of Pilates over an eight week period or you will have assessments while waiting for a Pilates class. Participants will be allocated to either a group based Pilates- classes will take place in the PESS building, in the University of Limerick, home-based Pilates- will be taking place at home, with the aid of a DVD or Waiting List group. The classes will be provided by a qualified instructor and are free of charge. A series of questionnaires relating to symptoms of depression, anxiety, fatigue and level of physical activity will be completed before, during and after the eight week Pilates sessions. Additionally, you will be provided with a heart monitor and Sensewear device to measure intensity and activity during the sessions.
