The UCD School of Medicine is delighted to partner with MS Ireland in order to expand our Patient Educator Programme, which currently involves educators that were recruited with the help of Arthritis Ireland and the Irish Society for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.
What is a Patient Educator?
A Patient Educator is someone with a chronic condition who has volunteered to help educate medical students, and has been trained to do so by our specialists in medical education.
Why involve Patient Educators in medical education?
There are three main reasons why we have developed the Patient Educator Programme.
1. As a patient, you are an expert on your condition. You have a perspective that students will not get from a medical textbook and by sharing your experience you will help to develop their understanding of your condition and how it is treated and managed.
2. By training a network of patients to work with our students, we can improve the knowledge and skills of our future doctors so that they not only understand how to treat your condition, but also the impact it has on all aspects of your life.
3. Research has demonstrated that education delivered by patients themselves is highly effective and motivating for medical students.
Where will the training and teaching take place?
All training and teaching sessions will take place on the UCD campus at Belfield, Dublin 4.
Where can I learn more about becoming a Patient Educator?
Further details are available on the UCD School of Medicine website
The closing date for applications: 31st May 2016.
